New exhaust soon!

I'm upgrading ASAP to a new exhaust system and I've got some varying quotes. I am getting a 3" Turbo back Mandrel bent exhaust system but I have been told a few different things from several apparent "specialist" exhaust shops. A part from the obvious difference in price between stainless steel and mild steel I have been told that stainless suffers from stress fractures more easily than mild steel. Also warranty is not covered if the vehicle is taken on the beach!!! My question is this..... should I spend the extra money on stainless or go mild steel and use the money else where???? Here are the quotes I received:

Men @ Work exhausts: $950 for mild steel fitted or $1450 for stainless steel fitted. (Both prices would be less if I opt for no muffler)

Cookies custom exhausts: $950 for mild steel fitted and does not recommend s/s.

Ebay: $705 for aluminised steel delivered and no cat. (A little more for cat).

Beaudesert Exhausts: $1135 + $25 packaging + Frieght for a full 2 3/4" mandrel bent exhaust system with a new high flow cat converter and dump pipe. aluminised mild steel system. Stainless steel is $2000 plus packaging, plus freight. Fitting is $300 extra for both.

Taipan exhaust: Still waiting to here back, from memory around $1500 delivered?

Unless you are giong to be spending a ot of time around salt water I wouldnt bother with the stainless option, your call though. I have the Taipan system myself, very happy with it. I know a lot of guys on here have the Beaudesert systems and seem very happy with them also. I guess with a factory made system like the Beaudesert & Taipan you know what you will be getting and it is a simple bolt on system that is proven to make a difference where as the custom systems may or may not be as good or up to the same standards.........My opinion anyway. Stainless steel is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking where mild steel isn't, but I don't think the conditions are right in an exhaust pipe.

Other than that you're just looking at the toughness of the two materials, which varies based on the exact composition of the mild steel systems, which nobody could tell you because it isn't an engineering alloy, just "mild steel" so could contain anything, and the 304 stainless, which is not bad at all.

With a stainless flex joint you don't need to worry about cracking anyway as a properly designed system will be under almost zero stress.

Ive heard back from Taipan and the price is as follows:

TaipanXP Vortex Exhaust System 3” Mandrel bent.
Ceramic coated dump pipe, 200 cell catalytic convertor, flex bellows, vortex muffler and rear resonator, black heat proof painted.
System comes with 2 year warranty and 5 years on muffler.

Mild Steel Supplied only $1450
Mild Steel Supplied and Fitted $1650
Stainless Steel Supplied $1980
Stainless Steel Supplied and Fitted $2180
Frieght and packaging $65

Ive also contacted Roo systems for a quote as well.

I think that stainless would be a good option for me but for the extra price I can't really see the value as there are no extra performance gains just longer life.

I just got a call from steve at Roo systems and their product sounds good:

3" mandrel bent Turbo back, 409 stainless steel, all single piece only tig welded at flanges, no cat, 3 yr warranty can use vehicle anywhere and still covered, 30 day money back if not happy. $1450

I'm going to do a write up for my exhaust which I picked up yesterday so Ill post it up next week when I finish. From what ive been told it is at least a 3hr job and 3 out of 5 stars for hardness.

Stainless Steel would be fine it wont crack and if you use at the beach it will be fine it wont corrode. And the exhaust will not have stress corrosion cracking as there is hardley any stress in the exhaust because they should all be built with the braided part for a bit of movement and flex.
