Hi, I'm new to this caper (forums). I have a D22 with a 150L Davis tank. It sprung a leak on my last 4WD (fairly severe) trek. It appears that the rear edge of the tank has been rubbed for many years by the tailshaft (suspension movement?) and finally broke through. Soap and then a self tapper with neoprene washer got me home (500Kms). The tank is still not leaking (yet). Has anybody else experienced this and is it a faulty design of the tank? A minor modification to the tank shape would solve the problem, I would presume. The tank was fitted 8 years ago, so the problem will take years to be detected. The wear seemed to be very slight and gradual. Is there a possibility of seeking redress from the tank manufacturer?

Welcome to the forum.

My instincts say that the manufacturer will blame an old supplier who had an old engineer and traded with a now-defunct company none of which are alive any more and good luck with pursuing that issue but would you like to buy a new (identical) one? Still, good luck, it's definitely worth a try.

A good metal fabricator shop will be able to manipulate it. Seems like there's only a millimetre in it - if you can't find a good metal fabricator, a good hit with a 4lb hammer will also do a reasonable job, then glass up the hole.

Long Range Tank

Thanks "Old. Tony". I figured time will be against me regarding claims, etc. It looks like it's a stainless steel tank. I am tempted to tackle it with a hammer (as you suggested). Have mates who will TIG weld it as required. Definitely going to be a home workshop job. The self tapper and washer will probably last for years, but it's at the spot where the shaft will contact it again on rough terrain. Cheers.
