Harmonic balancer removal

I'm trying to remove my harmonic balancer pulley to change the front crank oil seal without any success. I've fabricated a tool to stop the pulley from spinning & got a bigger braker bar on the bolt & snapped the socket. Has anyone on this forum removed the harmonic balancer? Is there a trick? Is it left hand threaded?

Please help?

Should be left handed...ive done my oil seal and its a bit of a pita...just make sure you do the bolt up to the correct tension then do the extra 120° turn...and make sure you oil the bolt face otherwise you wont get it done up.

Im pretty sure i used a 3 foot bar to crack it and do it back up

Can u please definitely confirm whether the bolt for the crank pulley is left hand thread or right hand as I've now broken a second socket (they both were cheap sockets) but rather snap a socket than a bolt

Hmm its possible its a standard thread but i cannot confirm.i know its bloody tight...OldTony may be able to confirm in his parts book.

The balancer unit according to the manual isn't something that is supposed to come apart. There are 6 bolts that hold it in position and it's supposed to just come out as a single component. These bolts are clockwise-tightening (anticlockwise to undo) and must be tightened to 29Nm (3kgm), and then turned an additional 65 degrees (precisely - the manual says to use a protactor to measure it!).

I think the op is referring to the front pulley. Not the harmonic balancer!

The front pulley bolt is a normal rh thread and is very tight. I used a six sided impact socket on a breaker bar with my jack handle as an extention. Put the truck in park in an auto or 5th gear on a manual with the handbrake applied hard.

Sorry yes I do mean the crank pulley, unfortunately I've also got the front diff out at the same time, so the front end being on stand I don't wanna rock the car, so I've made a tool to lock the pulley in place. I'll grab a good quality socket after work & give it a good go now I know it's definitely a right hand thread

Any luck? Having the same issue. The seal behind the pulley has let go. (Hence the reason for needing to get it off) have even tried using the starter to crack it but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated, been like this for a week now

GOT IT!!!!! Hey guys quick update. Ok so ended up chocking the wheels, hand brake on, car in 6th. 3 quarter breaker (1m long) with 19mm socket. Turning anti-clockwise, would only get half a turn and the pulley would wind backs a little. Take the socket off rotate it so I could get the bar back on it again and did this about 5 times then got a heavy duty battery rattle gun on it for the 100th time and it finally came off. What a pain in the arse that was.

Have you got the tightning procedure sorted?
One thing that helped me was to grease the bolt face then tension it to the required torque settong then do the extra 120°turn....specs ore on the yd25.com.au site anywhoo

Just a quick suggestion to all those struggling getting this one off... if you have a heat gun handy give it a bit of a warm up. Don't make it red hot obviously as you don't want to damage the rubber, but get it nice and warmer and then get a big long breaker bar to put a nice constant force on it. I have never had an issue getting one off like this, first time every time this way. Rattlegun is also good if you have it, but if you can budge it slightly first with heat and bar method, even a mm or two, then give it the rattle.
