Has anyone got a combined GPS and reverse cam? I dont want too much crap hanging of the dash. I looked in JB Hifi, arb, and dick smith but none have a combined unit.

My Pioneer F900BT does this nicely. It's a little quirky, and costs about $2500 with camera (not including fitting).

It runs Windows CE v5, plays MP3s, has an iTouch/iPod adapter, USB adapter, AUX input, plays DVD, has Parrot Bluetooth built in etc etc. Nice unit, big $.

if your going to spend that sort of $$$ then get a decent reverse camera. CCD and changable/adjustable lens.

I built a car pc, with a lilliput touch screen running centrafuse software. That allows me to have ,GPS, bluetooth, OBD, reverse camera,IPOD, DVD, digital TV/Radio, wireless Internet,Skype, etc etc. Hardware cost was around $800. Some stuffing around at first, had to use a SSD because of vibration, but is now working faultlessly. Check out mp3car.com for more info on installing a carpc.

car pc's are very versatile but the drawbacks far outweigh the benefits. First, you have to have an inverter to change 12vdc to 240v ac. Then there are the speakers which you have to modify to fit your car. You can't just use car speakers cos of the impedence problems - you have to use pc speakers, and pc speakers aren't designed to fit in a car or to even withstand the extreme cabin temperatures that a car is subjected to in summer.
You won't be able to play any cd's or DVD's because of vibration problems. Everything has to be downloaded onto the hard drive.
The load up time is a pain as well. Can you imagine every time you go for a short ride in your ute to different places and having to wait a minute or so for windows to load just so that you can listen to your music?

IMO, a very time consuming project that requires a lot of f**king around is not worth the effort.

Having said that, there is a company which makes a pc for cars and I think you can hook up car speakers to that pc. But the cost is ridiculous. For that sort of money, I rather just get an Alpine multimedia unit.

Not sure where you got that info from but it's totally incorrect, car speakers work fine, just need to add an amp, power supply is from a $80 M2 12v-12v unit, that controls startup/Shutdown or hibernate with the ignition, I have mine set for 4 hours before a total shutdown. Cd's and dvd's play as normal unless on corrugated roads, but then you just use the hard drive, which is no big deal. Using Tiny XP, boots up in 45 secs and comes out of hibernate in around 20secs,
Mine is mounted under the centre consol double sided tapped to the gearbox tunnel just in front of the gear lever, no problems with overheating even driving 12 hours straight on the GIB through the Kimberley in 38C weather.

I will never buy another car stereo again because the pc is more versatile, cheaper and easy to upgrade or repair.

Yes, I overlooked that option. But nevertheless, it's still a lot of 'extras' that you have to buy and install and hookup to get the whole system going properly. And at the end of the day, all those 'extras' add up to a lot of space, a lot of wires and a substantial amount of money.
Sound wise aint impressive either. You won't get impressive sound at all, unless you spend thousands. But doing so defeats the purpose of a car pc.
45sec to boot up? That's still an eternity when it comes to in car audio mate. Leaving the pc in hibernation aint a good thing either. It means you have to connect a seperate switch from the ignition so that power is going to the pc regardless of whether or not the accessory/ignition is on.
And how about the fluctuating voltage to the pc every time you crank the starter motor? I'm sure that aint good for your motherboard.

Like I said earlier - too much of a PITA.

LOL, mate you have no idea how a carpc works, I suggest you do some more research.

Do you agree with me that a car pc takes up a lot of space?
-First You have the monitor. It can't be any ordinary monitor - it has to be a touchscreen. No point getting a mouse and keyboard.
-Then you have to find a spot to mount the hard case which contains your mother board, psu, DVD player etc.
- But that's not all, you'll need a spot to hide your inverter as well.

All This along with your amps for driving your car speakers.

Most people have a hard time just connecting a basic stereo in their car let alone all this stuff.

That's a nice unit, but look at the price - 9999.00 Euros (AU$16,000.00) Yikes! And that is with no DVD player or HDD (extras for those). You gotta be kidding me, for that kind of money I can put together a system that will give audiophiles and movie buffers wet dreams plus whatever else you want, even the kitchen sink. Heck, I can even chuck in a big 42 inch Plasma tv at the back of your ute for you as well - just to keep your dogs entertained:big_smile:

Err I don't think that is the real price, more like a fill in/default price for the shopping cart.

Car PC's have come a long way, after hooking up peripherals much better value for money than doing things seperately.

Unfortunately, that is the real price. I tried the checkout and they wanted to charge me 29 Euros for shipping to Australia and the total came out to be 10028.00Euros.

The main reason I went for a carpc was to run oziexplorer, garmin navigator and google maps when offroading.

OK, well here's a couple more, at about a 6th of the price.

Kustom PCs JKM / Infill G4 Double-DIN Car-PC Mobile Spec
JKM Infill G4 In Car UK Computer Double Din Dash Windows PC Touch Screen Nav Blue Tooth Multi Media

Lot's of online shops will put a ridiculous price if they aren't in stock either.

That's more reasonable. But I would rather spend AU$1500 on the top of the line Alpine multimedia unit fully installed with GPS, reverse cam, DVD,mp3,Divx, digital TV etc. (yes, i can get it that cheap).
Alpine Electronics of Australia

Guess whatever floats your boat.

you can run oziexplorer on the $600 unit from ebay that was mentioned earlier in the thread. I like the carpc's but one of the ebay jobs will do everything I will ever need. street nav, oziexplorer, reverse camera, tv, dvd, mp3, bluetooth hands free and even an fm radio! yep that'll do.

Ther is a Navi Gator that I have spotted on Ebay a couple of times. It has a standard GPS unit and a wireless reverse camera. Looking to get one for my car. Do not really want to change the head unit.
