Hi Everyone

Is it normal for these Garrett turbos to have oil sitting on the intake side of the turbine. Engine not using noticable amounts of oil. No oil in the exhaust tail pipe. Is this leading to my problem of clouds of smoke at night and can only be seen using headlights.

It's oil from the crankcase ventilation. Small amounts of combustion gas seep past the piston rings, entering the crankcase. Hot oil - hot enough to form a vapour - is carried out by this gas through the PCV hose - this hose runs from the top of the engine at the rear to the air intake just in front of the turbocharger intake. The exhaust gas and the oil (which liquefies as it cools) are then ingested by the engine and combusted.

How to stop it? You can't, really. You can reduce it - fit a catch can, like Lawry says.

yup crankcase vents the 'gaseous' oil into the cool intake, oil goes back to liquid and then sits there, is ingested by the turbo (shouldn't hurt it though) then goes in and mixes with egr gases in the inlet manifold - turns to a gooey paste that coats everything ultimately choking the engine of air as the passages are blocked

to stop that put a catch can in (i had the same although not as bad) i filtered out 200ml in the catch can in about 7000k

Cheers guys, I'll get me self a catch can organised.............
Aw main reasion i was asking this question is that the Nav is still under extended warranty and i just getting my facts right.

Cheers again for clearing this up.............
