Does anyone know about putting Freewhell and hubs on a D40 or diconnecting full time drive to Front Prop Shaft?

Regards Simon

You could drop the front prop shaft out. That would allow you to use low range as a 2WD. Not sure you could get hubs to go on the front that will do what you want, but where there's a will there's a way I suppose!

What's wrong with yours?

Hi Tony,

There is nothing wrong just running a front propshaft for no reason on the road, i know on the 80 series they could disconnect the switch on the back of the transfer case and then the FT4WD would not drop in and out, it only worked when you put it in 4WD.

If you're looking for a way to reduce the rolling resistance you should pop the axles out from the front diff, which gets turned over all the time in ours - it's the transfer case where the choice is made whether to engage the front drive or not, so in 2H it's purely a RWD vehicle where forward motion - and not the gearbox - turns the front diff over.

Is there so much wear that this is an issue?

Murph

actually yes.

in UK the D22 didn't come out with hubs. they wear out the prop shaft quite quickly and nissan had to make a stronger replacement for it.

by fitting hubs it saves fuel, tire wear and driveline wear. ie CV's don't wear out, CV boots don't split, the prop shaft which people forget to grease doesn't wear out.
the catch is before you can use 4x4 you need to get out and lock the hubs, and you need to put the hubs in now and then to keep everything lubed.

The whole car is wearing out, why worry about the front diff? By the sounds of things you don't use it anyway.

sounds like you missed the point. without hubs it still gets used regardless and its just another thing to brake down. some of the UK guys where going through prop shafts every 60tho.
fitting hubs pays for itself just from drop in fuel usage alone.

if you use it that much you wear the rear diff out, it would be likely the front diff will be worn out as well as CV's. so its 3x the repair price just for the sake of a set of hubs.
also its 3x the amount of driveline that can break leaving you stranded in middle of nowhere.

Hi guys,
I hope that this post does help those of you with a few questions about this topic.
IOT put free-wheeling hubs (FWH) on the D40/R51, the design and construction of a FWH should be much more complex than a simple land-cruiser, patrol, suzuki (etc, etc....) FWH.
This is due to the requirement of the D40/R51 outer CV spindle to preload the front hub unit bearings (to 250Nm from memory).
Once mounted to the vehicle it then becomes the role of the front hub assembly (complete with drive flange, bearings, and wheel speed sensor) to suspend, and propel the vehicle whilst also indicating to the ECU (for ESC and ABS) wheel speed.
IOT put FWH onto a unit bearing assembly major re-working of the design would be required.
Cheers, Davo.
