Hi all.

Purchased a new manual ST navara diesel in November 2010. Still loving it as much as the first day (where i racked up a tick over 100k's!)

Bought the Nav with the main goal of towing a 2+ ton canoe trailer up and down the NQ coast.

Found it pulls well enough and have no trouble overtaking when needs be, though the fuel consumption is more than i had hoped for.

Am seeking help/recommendations on what mods i should look at.

I am not a real off road kinda guy so all the bush bashing/hilux recovery type stuff is of no interest to me. Am more interested in power/efficiency and general joy of driving.

At this point in time, she is still pretty standard and am able to get by but would love to get the opinions of some Navheds.

Cheers

That's a bloody heavy canoe trailer. Not an outrigger trailer by any chance?

Welcome aboard.

Scotty might have added a GenIII to his list but it's fairly complete  as it is. You might consider an ECU reset - the factory fuel map is fairly light, but the new vehicle fuel map is overfuelled so that the engine doesn't run too lean (and lean = hot). After the 10,000km service it should be reset so that it reverts to factory (default) settings, but they don't always do that.

You can do it yourself, as often as you like - the ECU learns your driving habits and always tends towards more fuel than less. If you have under 1,000km on yours I'd not do it yet, diesels take a few thousand km to bed in and you don't want that much heat generated in its early life. You can load it up, sure, but don't underfuel it at high revs.

ECU Reset Procedure:

1) Write down trip meter values if you use these to record economy
2) Get your radio PIN ready and unload the vehicle so it's empty
3) Remove the battery negative lead and press your foot on the brake for a few seconds
4) Put the battery lead back on
5) Take the vehicle for a gentle 10minute drive, don't over-rev or use too much throttle, get the vehicle up to about 80-90km/h
6) Pull over and turn the vehicle off

It's not that hard. I'm actually going to investigate a means of resetting the ECU without making the dash and radio lose their settings and will probably make a new thread about that, but this'll do for now.

Sadly no, although I have considered getting myself a kayak in the 4 to 5m range with waterproof storage and the ability to mount a canopy - mostly for exploring gorges and photographing them.
