Hello to everyone in the forum.

I have been reading for some months all the information contained in the threads and find it very interesting and informative. However I now find myself in need of some advice and this is the first time in.

I have 2006 Navarra D22 with 3l turbo diesel. Has been sitting around for about 2 weeks and decided to start it up. Went for about 30 secs at rough idle then stopped. All attempts to restart failed. Checked primer pump and plenty of pressure. Removed hose and plenty of fuel getting through. Motor turns over but not starting. Its like old diesels when you manually shut off pump.

Brief conversation with mechanic I know talks about thousands of dollars to fix pump as he thinks computor has s... itself. NRMA bloke came and said f....i...I...know.

Any suggestions as to easy/cheap possible answers would be good, or place where I can get reasonably priced replacement etc.

welcome to the forum TonyP, Hopefully someone will be able to give you an idea. i reckon you'll get quite a few ideas. i've personally never had anything like this happen. good luck!
 
I'd start at the obvious.

1) Check the air filter in case it is blocked.

2) Have you let the glow plugs heat up sufficiently before starting?

3) Are the glow plugs working?

4) Can the fuel tank vent to atmosphere?

5) Is the fuel filter partly/mostly blocked?

6) Is there a secondary fuel filter fitted, and the fuel pump is not strong enough to haul the fuel up from the tank? Once the secondary filter starts to accumulate foreign matter, it is more difficult to bring the fuel up to the engine bay and some people install a booster pump to overcome this.

7) Is there a water separator in use in the engine bay and has this filled?

8) I'm not sure on this one - the primary fuel pump may detect water in the fuel and if so, it may prevent the engine from being started. You might need to bleed the water out of the pump first.

9) Are any warning lights showing on the dash, indicating a possible fault that the ECU is detecting?

Diesel engines are fairly simple in actual running. If it's still cranking over it doesn't mean the engine is toast. Hopefully there's something here that helps.
 
Have you put the computer in diagnostic mode to see if there is any fault codes ?

30 seconds and running rough and shutting down, sounds like air in the lines to me.

if there where no problems still after its been sitting, then i would say its got air into the lines and pump. the problem is that it takes 15psi pressure to push fuel/air through which is hard to do with the primer pump.
probably require to bump the engine over, pump primer, bump engine over etc

Although initially scarred by my usual mechanic who was talking possibly pump replacement, Old Tony had it right about diesel simplicity, and Dave and Tweak had it mostly right.

As it turns out two simple problems at the same time. In sitting around it did get air in the lines and although primed did not get far enough. Also battery was below 9.6 cranking volts which computor needs to get going. This is even dispite engine turning over I thought reasonably well.

Primed up pump, piggy backed on new battery and a little start ya ******* and we are now going again.

Another succes story in overcoming adversity with a little help from the NRMA.

You're probably right Old Tony. Can't make the Saturday run but I'm going to Sydney early next week which should blow a few cobwebs out.
