Hi Guys.. New Perth Member here..

Is anyone aware of a way / place to clear the dreaded DPF light so I can fit a DPF bypass?

My recently acquired 2008 Navara threw the code 1 day into ownership - and now Nissan are telling me it's 4k to replace.. Not keen on this idea - and am now chasing other options..

Nissan won't clear the error saying "they can't as the DPF won't let them until its cleaned successfully"..

A few places I have called have said "they should be able too" clear it - but I need something a little more precise..

So - any info would be greatly appreciated..

I have searched, and I could not find a specific "when this happens, you need to do xyz" type reply..

I hear that you get the DPF pipe, go to the dealer and get them to run a regenerate and then HEY PRESTO.. But not one post I have read 100% says these are the steps.. Being *very* new to the diesel game, then I am outta my depth.. Hence why i was looking for something specific.

Anyways, during my "there must be a better way", I came across a company in perth that actually CLEANS the DPF back to within 98% of new. And for a MUCH smaller price than the cost of the Nissan Replacement DPF... So I think I might try this avenue..

Anyone had a "clean" done on them instead of just putting in the delete pipe?
 
If the ute's not in limp mode yet then take it out onto the motorway and drive at speeds over 80 for about 15-20 mins and it should clear the light.
Once the light's off your safe to remove the DPF and fit the delete pipe.

If the engine is in limp mode then you'll need Nissan to do a manual burn.
 
Well.. I had the DPF cleaned by a company that specialises in that area. Apparantly it's well used in the trucking industry - and just new to Australia (but has been in Europe for years - given the cost of new DPF's!)

330km later.. DPF light is on again!! So in 330km I have made enough soot to fill a basically new DPF...

I've also gone through a tank a fuel in that 330km..

Definately pissing off the DPF now.. Just hope it does not go into LIMP mode before I can..

Anyone else experieced such a small time between DPF lights?
 
in 2 weeks of ownership, ive seen the DPF light on more than I have seen it off..

Anyone know what would make it burn fuel and fill a DPF in 1 week of driving? I had some heavy Peek Hour traffic, but surely 1 week is not normal..

Dilemna - dealer or DPF Delete and hope it fixes it :(
 
What sort of oil is in it?

The only time I have seen mine come on while not a deliberate act was pretty much brought on by my driving at the time. And it preformed exactly as it was suppose to when the light came on.
 
Oil was put in at the dealership after they tried several regens but failed. I then had the DPF cleaned back to new. One would only think they put the right oil in.

I do, however, think they did a regen on the new DPF to get the light off and not simply reset it as a new DPF as they should have.

I'm now too scared to drive it incase the regen function does not work and I am left in limp mode and needing another $500 dealer initiated regen.
 
Wouldn't be the first time a dealer has used the wrong oil, it wouldn't be a common thing but it would be easily possible. I would be questioning exactly what the dealership did before chasing other options.
 
If you've got an as-new DPF in the car and it's still throwing CEL on you I'd suggest it's not the DPF at all, but one of the sensors. Fitting a DPF Delete pipe won't change a thing and you'll be cursing the $ spent.

If you are driving the car moderately - let's say not revving past 3,000rpm - and it's still chucking a wobbly, I'd be aiming at the sensors instead. If you're confident that the DPF regen was completed by Nissan (and there's no reason why it wouldn't have been done, they just press a few buttons and let the car rev its ringer off out the back) then unless the DPF is truly cactus it can only be the sensors.

And sensors aren't infallible. Might be worth getting a price on the sensors first. Even if you go for a delete pipe, the sensors need to be intact and feeding data to the ECM, so a new pair of sensors won't be a waste. You wouldn't replace just one - to be sure, I'd be replacing both.

I am quite surprised the dealer isn't doing this under warranty.
 
Tony... I am also of your way of thinking.. That it is a sensor.. I had the 02 sensor replaced when last it was in.. It can only be the heat sensor now?!?

My other concern is that it ate a whole tank of diesel in just 310km... You could actually see the gauge moving when doing a freeway run!

It's like the car is in permanent DPF Regen mode..

I don't want to drive it with the DPF light on (no CEL yet) and find that it fails regen and goes into limp mode again!

Anyways, the car is booked in FOR NEXT WEEK (earliest they could get me in) so hopefully this problem is sorted once and for all..

It's just a really big annoyance.. I just want to be able to enjoy the ute some, but alas so far it's just pain!!

Good thing I've got the SSv to toodle around in otherwise it would be painful.
 
There's actually a pair of pressure sensors, one in front of the filter matrix and one on the other side. Pressure differential will exist regardless of how clean it is, but once it reaches a certain difference the ECM assumes (rightly) that the DPF is starting to block up and needs to be cleaned.

An errant pressure sensor will provide just that sort of feedback.

Here's a cheap (zero cost) thing to try - switch the two sensors around. If the front one is returning a normal signal and the rear is returning a low signal (faulty) then switching them will remove the problem if my thinking on the ECM program is right (I'm hoping they didn't take the ABS value of the difference in the sensor return values).

If that works, you have the answer. If it doesn't, then maybe the DPF is actually damaged!

I suggested this sensor switcheroo in another thread but haven't seen a response to it yet.
 
I might give that a go.. see how it goes..

DPF is not damaged.. Had it out and FULLY cleaned.. All checked out fine.. clean and as new..

The fuel usage has me stumped.. It's like its on constant regen, and that may be the cause of excessive soot?!?
 
The regen cycle does use some fuel, and a fair bit if some reports are anything to go by. A former Navara owner and respected member of this forum (BossHog) had his DPF removed and his car triggered a regen - causing a plume of white smoke behind the car. That indicates that the fuel usage would be quite high.

A standard regen should use approx 1L/100 km's but if your DPF is badly blocked or in your case something in the system is wrong then consumption could be extremely higher.
