I take it you cant get the nut off due to the damage?
If so then you will need to cut the nut off, then re-tap a new clean thread and replace the nut for a new one.
Ive had to chop one off a landcruiser chopping down the side with a dremel, took a long time but after cutting into it we broke the remainder off with a cold chisel.
Thanks for the welcome. Nut was off .replacing wheel bearings.must have damaged it in the process.any idea what size thread it is

Welcome to the forum.
It will probably be metric, can you get hold of a thread file?
If so the file usually has a thread gauge on the end so you can identify what pitch it is. You should be able to restore it with the file.

No sorry mate i have no idea what size it is, but if you have the nut you could take it an engineering supplier and they will work it out for you and obviously from that work out what tap you need to fix the thread if the file doesnt work.
