Well, to save myself the time and headache I opted to have my clutch replaced by Nissan @ 170,000. Cost just under $1500 for machining, bearing, clutch and plate. Fairly happy with their service but I found the new clutch has a bit of shudder when taking off in 1st. I thought maybe it just needs to bed in or something but 3 weeks later and one offroad camping trip it still seems to be the same, perhaps even slightly worse :hmpf:

I just rang them to ask about it and Glen tells me that when people ride the clutch or tow a heavy load that can tend to happen. I said it's not really fishing season yet so I haven't done any towing, just offroad camping. I just drive it like I always have, let the clutch out from idle without any throttle and away ya go, normally smooth as butter. He said that it's not uncommon for them to do it and it's probably normal.

I never noticed it before but maybe it was the old clutch slipping which made it smoother? Or maybe the former owner had a heavy duty in there?? I did instantly notice the new one felt much lighter than the old one. Genuine maybe no good for Mud Terrains?

I have to take it back for a centre bearing and uni replacement so I'll get them to check it then.

Anyone else have an experience with the genuine clutch?

Mine shudders like a shitting dog - but its got 260k on it. A new clutch should not shudder. My guess is that you've either just gone from HD to standard and it don't like your muddies - or your rear main seal is leaking oil onto your nice shiny new clutch plate (and making a mess of it) - is it worse cold or warm?

Of course being Nissan, the apprentice could have put it in backwards!

Hahaha... I needed a laugh this morning!
But seriously, that's gotta be at least you're second clutch right?!

It doesn't seem to be temperature affected and if it were the main seal it would probably have been noticeable with the old clutch too. How easy is it to put the clutch in backwards? If it can go in the wrong way then Nissan apprentice could be the issue

It really is not a smooth take off anymore, kind of annoying when I'm in traffic actually.

When I was offroad I felt a little uncomfortable with it on the steep gradients. For example, was coming up an incline in low range and it started to get a little too much for second gear so I came to a stop and put it in first but when I tried to pull away again it was far from the experience I was used to with the old clutch. Kinda of went in with a little thud, needed a bit more pedal than I'm used to. I used to like the fact that I virtually never needed any throttle pulling away, not 4wd'ing and not even towing the boat...

I'm going to drop in and get them to test drive it this week and hope they don't try to tell me it's normal

hmmm... on second thought maybe I wont go back for that uni/centre bearing, $1200 for half a tailshaft!!

Turns out there's no separate part available for the uni :-S

Take your old one to a tail shaft specialist. You can get new uni joints and bearings plus balancing for less than half that cost.

That's the shot ! mmmm balanced :) things go better that way !
And regarding the shudder -NO, a new one shouldn't ! Take it to an independent mechanic and get his input! cheers

For interest sake I have also replaced my clutch today, and I have found the same issue of it being light, almost like a corolla clutch, but no shudder at all, I got used to the heavier clutch and IMO, I prefer one that is on the heavier side.
I made the comment to the shop and he advised that the newer design clutchs are much lighter but have the same clamp power on the flywheel ..(Go figure)

It will show up first outing with the boat in tow at well over 2tonnes it will test this out for sure, I replaced an exceede clutch, with a 4terrain HD..
