Clutch Noise

Been away for a while but thought id drop in and say gday and put a question to ya's.

Had a clutch noise for about 18months, as u push the pedal in it makes a squawking noise in the bellhousing, accompanied by a binding feeling as the diaphram goes over center, never slipped but get some heatsoak thro it u just didnt quite trust it.

Always thought it was just a buggered pressure plate/diaphram, over xmas i (with help of retired heavy vehicle mech mate) pulled the clutch out and replaced it witha exedy heavy duty item, spigiot bush was pretty tired, flywheel bolts blue along with area around holes in crank, minor mark on end of clutch shaft, throw out bearing was a tad noisy, clutch plate still had plenty of wear, dampening springs in plate shagged no sign of pressure plate/diaphram probs, fingers still all level and intact.
Machined flywheel, clean everything up, buffed and greased throwout fork piviot, applied lithium grease to spline, throwout bearing slide, impregnated oil into spigiot bush and added a little grease, torqued everything up, reassembled the vehicle.
Drove for a week without anything but bliss, wife drove it around town for a few hrs shopping and when returned she said noise and bindingness returned, told her she was on drugs cos it cant, drove it myself and sure as shit it had, got in it next morn perfect clucth once again, not a squeek.

Since then its gotten worse, notchy gearshift, little shudder on launch from dead stop and reversing uphill and changing down thro gears it shudders bad as u change from 3rd to 2nd and let clutch out at lower revs, but all this really only takes place after driving it for a while i;e heats up and happens with engine off. taking it to clutch and gearbox specialists on mon for dianosis but was wondering if anyone in navara land had any ideas or experience.

hey all, just thought id stick me head in the door for a peak around , wanted to update this post to conclude this story and share a bit of knowlege.
if youve read the story above you wld know i replaced the clutch in my D22 with a exedy heavy duty item ($600 with trade discount, around $700+ retail) and was still havin dramas, shudders, notchy gear changes, engaging hard and the annoying "sqwarking" noise as you depress the pedal, well i pulled the box out again on weekend and replaced throwout fork and piviot (genuine only, $81.50 for both) lubed piviot with anti sieze lubricant and walla problem solved. Both pivot dish in fork and pivot had tiny amount of wear and it was actually binding up causing clutch not to engage or disengage smoothly even tho had fresh grease still on contact surface of pivot....go figure. My contact at a nsw nissan dealer also told me on the hush that D22's both with ZD and YD engines and D40's have notorious clutch problems, to the extent he told me not to buy a secondhand D22 or D40 without clutch already changed or plan to do it asap....will just fail for no apparent reason...always replace with heavy duty one....with knowing this now, and symptoms he gave, im positive i caught mine just before it let go

Thanks mate. I don't think it is just the Navs having clutch issues, the hiluxes have for years aswell. I will be replacing mine with a heavy duty one if/when it goes. I will do the other bits as well now!

Sorry mate just seen this thread and I wasn't hardly on here in January, mine does the exact same as yours does. My clutch aslo skeeks are doing a river crossing or 2.

all good dave, hey my clutch started week after creek crossing, no water got in tho so cant figure it. BUT at the end it would do it if it was raining...if its makin that sqwarkin noise (i know 2 blokes local that does it too) it will get worse the longer you leave it, until it affects the operation of the actual clutch...i got 30thou after it started...i have a idea i want to test with this prob... pull rubber boot off bellhousing and with small syringe conected to small tube push some quality high temp antisieze lubricant...eg loctite... between the pivot and the throwout fork as you gently pull fork off piviot....have to remove slave cyl to do this. Im hoping to catch up with one of the local blokes and try it.. my therory is that the grease is getting hot and melting out or the forks are getting hot enough to be affected by a cold dunking. if you do try this let me know how it goes
