hi guys ... we have been towing our van around QLD been all good except for yesterday ... it started to make a weird noise .. then it blew something now it sounds like it has blown something in the exhaust sounds like a tractor (loud) when i looked through to the engine with the torch last night left hand side i can it has blown something there very soooty ..any ideas ??? we are parked up in kingaroy QLD off to see nissan this morning ..im thinking exhaust manifold ??
cheers Kev

if its sooty it could only be coming from either the EGR or thr exhaust manifold/ turbo. verry unusual though. the catalactic converter may have colapsed and created to much back pressure. also the DPF (if auto) if it clogs or dosent burn off correctly causing back pressure. and anything down stream in the exhaust muffler ect... Good luck with nissan...

I'm wondering about the EGR tube as well. The turbo/dump/DPF/Cat are possibilities but the turbo/dump pipe are quite strong and not going to blow soot like that without impacting the performance of the vehicle significantly.

My bet is the EGR tube. Get someone to make a blanking gasket for the exhaust side (you might have to remove the alternator to get to it cleanly). The EGR tube is a gold tube that connects from the exhaust manifold around the front of the motor to the inlet manifold. It's only purpose in the engine is to increase fuel consumption by reducing the engine's efficiency - I'm sure it's a conspiracy by the oil companies.

been to nissan they had a quick look at it and said manifold gasket got back to the showgronds and had a good look it has broken the ERG tube on the exhaust side -- never had a problem with the DPF at all except fuel consumption... ya think nissan will blank it off ?

wishfull thinking.... ha ha .. if its not under waranty i would just blank it off and weld up the egr.. But im kinda wondering why it broke??? i woukd dig around a little and find out why it let go something else might be loose and causing movement as the egr isent really undre that much pressure to break... Good luck...

I wish i had blanked mine on the inlet side now.. but the nuts were too hard to get undone. dont think the blanking plates would be under much stress given no bends or welds usualy where cracks propergate...

Seen the photos in the egr/ butterfly mod super thread of the egr plate completely corroded away? Ouch!!!!! Where did all the bits of corroded metal go?
