big box on intake pipe

my 06 d40 has a big plastic box hooked up to the side of theintake pipe. what is it for, and does it need to be there. is it a baffle of some sort?

Do you mean the air box containing the air filter??

no, its on the pipe from the airbox to the turbo

It's a resonator box to cut down on induction noise. No it doesn't have to be there. Latter models don't have them at least i haven't seen one like that. Taking it out wont improve performance tho.
