Hi I'm thinking about buying a D40 to tow my caravan. I like the towing capacity of 3 ton but am worried the 4cylinder diesel being able to pull up the hills etc. Also will there be a substancial fuel saving? My wife is concerned about it being a rough vehicle to ride in. The other choice is a Pathfinder if it's smoother. I joined this forum to read about the Navara and the Pathfinder as I like these vehicles. I currently use a Ford Territory for towing, expensive for fuel but lovely to ride in. Do you think I'm due for a change?

Welcome to the forums.

My Nav has towed over 3 tonnes of cows up and down mountain goat country on a few occasions and it does it fine. It might not have the power of a big v8 or some other cars but I don't drive it that way either so I wouldn't be worried on that account. As for the ride between the Nav and the Pathy given that they come off the same production line and are almost identical to each other (STX model only) I'd suggest if you like one you'll like the other.

The Pathfinder and Navara share the same front suspension ,engine and gearbox. Basically it will come down to your own tastes as to which you choose Pathy or Nav.Be aware that there are 2 differnt types of the D40. The ST-X is made in Spain and the other models in Thailand. There are minor differences between the trucks. As far as I am aware the ST-X and Pathfinder are both made in the same plant in Spain.
Towing wise I think the Diesel is certainly very capable and would be as good as anything on the market.

Fuel Savings.

Thanks for the replies. Fuel savings compared to a 4.0 Ford Territory AWD. I notice diesel prices are higher than ULP so it may be the same at the end of the day.

I've got a D22 and a Territory RWD. Don't tow with either much, except when I cut some wood a tow a trailer in the Nav. The Terry is a great family car and not too bad on fuel, no worse than the XR6 we had before it. Thought of getting a diesel Territory when they come out later in the year?

Try your calculations for yourself but when I did it I worked out with the difference in economy diesel needed to be nearly 30 cents a litre dearer than ULP to make a difference, but then I'm getting at or lower than Nissan's fuel figures. Calculations will vary daily so it's not like it was 100% accurate now or back when I did it but they were my figures and others will have different ones, so really at the end of the day it's still an individual thing.
