2009 STX 4WD servicing

Hi all,

Recent purchaser of 2009 D40 STX dual cab diesel.... It is coming up to it's 30K service and whilst flicking through the booklet I note it gets an oil & filter change every 5K..

That seems a bit excessive ?

I was also quoted $395 for the service at my local Nissan dealer, again this seems way over the top for what is listed to be done...

This is another topic where there is no right or wrong answer.

I've run bigger diesels for up to 20k between services it all comes down to how you use them, some people swear by 5K servicing others follow Nissan's instructions and do it every 10K. A mate of mine drove 120K in a Prado and only got the 1K service done and while I wouldn't recommend that it shows 10K is easily achievable. (and for the record resale value wasn't effected when he added up the cost he would have paid them to service it every 10K)

I think you'll find the book has the sections to allow for 5K servicing but they also suggest for the average owners 10K is acceptable and will not break any warranty agreements.

Servicing costs vary between dealers and there might be heaps of reasons for this and given that 30K isn't a major service going by my dealers pricing I'd say $400 isn't far off normal for them but going by others on here who are getting Nissan to do their servicing I'd suggest maybe it was a bit high too. You'd probably halve that by going to any other independent mechanic or even an ultra tune type place though.

I paid about $320 for my 30k service... they told me the 40k will cost about $800.00.
There is always the option to take it to someone else other than Nissan I suppose. That is just the cost of servicing a new car at the dealer.

u should do the basic services urself mate...oil/fuel/air filter and check all reservoirs every 10k. and get nissan to do the important services (40k 60k 100k or woteva they class important) and request a software check to be done as well (OBDII tools etc)

Ring a few dealers, they make prices as they go, there seems to be no Nissan set fee. My local dealer wanted over $500 for 20k service, I rang up Nowra nissan, and it was less than $300. Worked out well, I pass through Nowra a lot.

I think it also has a lot to do with who you get on the phone as well. When I was ringing around one guy asked me if mine had the DPF, where as one guy assumed despite it being a mid 09 and an auto that it wouldn't have the DPF. Whether or not a DPF should change the cost isn't really much of a debate, they can and in most cases will charge more for a DPF fitted engine just like they charge more for diesel over petrol.

If you are ringing around getting prices make sure each person you talk to understands, (even if you have to make them say it back to you) exactly what model and service you are after. If they quote you a D22 20K and you're after a D40 50K then they wont offer you any sort of recompense for them not asking all the questions to begin with.

That's probably an extreme mistake but in cases of a DPF it's probably not that much different from quoting for a car with one fitted and one without given that there are things that must be taken into account for one and not the other which probably change costs.

Just had my local dealer (seymour, vic) do my 50k service, only cost $225, which I thought was pretty good. $825 for my 40k service from ultra tune in Darwin.

Mines going in for the 40K service on Friday at Nissan. Been quoted approx $650.

Have a good look at the service book and you should find that at the '5' k intervals, ie: 5k, 15k etc, a oil and filter change is necessary if conditions A,B,C and D are met,
otherwise at the normal 10,20,30k intervals.
I know the handbook is hard to interpret and it took me a few times.

My wife was quoted $1200 for the 40K service at Nissan Lutwiche in Brissy and $1100 from Moorooka Nissan, my car is a TD Auto if that makes any difference, 08KING is yours a TD Auto or manual, that is a fair amount cheaper.
I will be taking it to my local mechanic for much much less.

Nissan won't tell you 5K servicing is only required if you do extreme 4 wheelin' otherwise it is your standard 10K servicing.
Myself - I don't use the dealers for servicing my Nav, I go to a 4WD specialist who does book servicing for $255 for a normal service and you are still covered by warranty.

It's a manual, I'll check how much the auto is when I'm there on Friday.

Just as a matter of interest, I have a manual as well and just had the 40K service done. Aside from the normal service things,they changed out Diff (Transfer Case) Oil front and back and there is a requirement to replace the 'Fuel Filter Diesel - $185-00' (Can't speak for Petrol). Total cost 295-00 because I opted not to change a perfectly serviceable filter.

I believe my dealer has the 40K service up at about the $800-odd mark. $1200 sounds like someone's paying for hors d'oeuvres and champers for the mechanics. I've just had the 20K done for $362.40, which seemed reasonable.

My dealer had $1400 for the 40K last time I was in there but down here it really seems to be a case of 2 hours from the city is far enough to screw customers.

One local mechanic down here charges $75 for diff oil in a Crewman and the guy around the corner, who strangely enough got the diff rebuild job, only charges $15 for the same amount of oil.

The unfortunate side of these issues is that some poor bugger must be paying the prices or those mongrels wouldn't be still in business. I suppose when it comes to car dealers though it's just further proof that the good deal you get on that new car still isn't making the dealer tighten any purse strings no matter how much of a bleeding heart story they give you.

The 40k service cost me close to $1200. Bit and pieces are made of bloody gold....ie the fuel filter costs $184, the oil (Shell helix fully synthetic) around $140 and on it goes.

Thanks for the replies.

To be honest I am thinking of doing it myself, at the end of the day it's only oil and a filter for this service, the rest is "check & inspect" which I have my doubts they actually do...

Besides, I am an aircraft mechanic by trade, I think I can handle it

On a side note though with warranty... On neither of my previous 2 cars was I ever asked to produce the service book to have anything fixed under warranty (Hyundai & Toyota)... As someone suggested I will look at the bigger services getting done by a mechanic, though probably not Nissan !
