on straight six,motor stops on one of 3 spots , it was always caused by wear on the pinion,and or the pinion not engaging fully, you can adjust this there is an adjuster screw with locknut that goes through the fork behind the solenoid ,i think mine had 10 th clearance ,its to stop pinion slamming against rear bush.and craking the housing.. test it on the bench even when you buy a new starter, shot bushes may contribute but you would expect starter to eventually short out.. i would be putting in a new starter is a must as well as new spigot bearing etc, i have replaced ring gears myself . best left to some one with experience because if you heat the ring gear to much it may not bond properly and spin off ,you can do some research on youtube, you may find a professional not a bush mechanic, showing how its done. do some pricing you may want to replace whole unit
