Hi guys,

Just purchased a 2010 D22 with 250,000kms I'm really impressed with it.

But looking through the service history doesn't look like it's had the timing chain done.

Should I just bite the bullet and get it done or just change if I hear any timing rattle etc ?

I'd get a trusted mechanic to have a listen to it. They'll put a stethoscope to the housing and have a listen. It's fairly easy to hear chain slap - if the tensioners aren't doing their job well, that will be the beginning of the end for the chains.

Over 390,000km on my YD25 and still on original chains. I have the mechanic listen to them at a major service, mostly because I'm paranoid.
 
It really seems to be the luck of the draw with these engines. 250k on yours and no drama's so far. Mine went at 189K, a lot of people have said just unlucky. Maybe mine was put together on a Friday afternoon or a Monday morning.

Just hate the feeling that a chain can let go and destroy the engine at any given time.

Pretty tough chains from factory but I replaced mine at 340k because the bottom was simplex. Took top cover off and measured tensioners and chain conditions. I upgraded to duplex setup. Pretty easy job to do yourself if you want to save $. I done a rough write up on whats involved.

It's a combination of things, I'd say.

Probably lucky to begin with by getting a good car.

Servicing has mostly been at the 10,000km mark but there have been a couple of times where I've suspected something was not quite right (one time I had a sensor wire break on me) so I asked for another oil + filter change in the middle of the period just to be safe. Oils used to be Nissan, then Penrite, and lately I think the guys are putting Valvoline in it.

Driving style also has a LOT to do with wear. I am fairly pedantic about keeping the engine as cool as possible - I monitor coolant temps with an alarm set at 105C (which the engine can do without penalty, but that's the point where it brings on ALL the cooling so that's also the point I don't go past). If it means kicking it down a gear or two to get over that hill then so be it. I can always pull to the side to let others past.

While I might have a joke or two about watching Hiluxes disappear in my mirror, I never actually do it - there's no point. Saving 10 or 15 seconds or even half an hour in a trip is nothing compared to the cost of having to rebuild the thing early.

I also believe in warming times and cheers about the oils too just good to know what other are running I do Penrite too just look for the oil codes on the back I also put lucas oil Stabiliser in it too but from my research it's not really that good apart from rebuilding lube but it's always made a difference I all my vehicles from gears to motor
 
Hey Guys,

I got 430ks from mine before the tensioners wore out.
If you treat them right with servicing correctly the aren't as bad as they say.
I don't drive it gently, loaded or not.
 
Just done my chains at 345km all good with only minor wear on a couple of the plastic runners. I was doing a blown head gasket, so did the lot. Went original replacement, not a great beliver in the conversion.. wider but narrower, swings & roundabout's. Original was just fine at 345km so decided with garage to do same again. It seems its the chain tensioner's failing that cause the problems...change oil and filter regularly and you should be good.

Now I have a question what causes the head gasket to go is it old age or to many heat irregular cycles
What are your thoughts 🤔
 
Collapsed plastics pipe into heater ... tee pieces just fell apart and I was on a busy roundabout...= blown head gasket... 4.50e for the tee pieces in brass... bit late but ?

Hi there, I lost all the coolant very quickly, a plastic tee piece collapsed, heater pipe / header tank junction.
Coolant gone in seconds and the temp went down first... then shot up, too late head gasket gone,
I have since fitted a Engine Guard with sensor on intake manifold.
Found a brass tee piece that fitted perfectly at a heating home specialists, very cheap...
