Hi.

Newbie here, hoping someone, somewhere nay have had this problem before..

I have a Thai 2011 D40 ST 6 Speed Diesel.
I can only get the cruise control to engage by pushing the gear stick to the left while driving. (I am currently using a bungee cord to apply enough pressure to the stick while I am driving).

There is another thread on the forums which explains how to replace the upper idle sensor on the top RHS of the gear stick in the console.

I have completely removed the console, and cannot find the switch.

Is this a Thai/Spanish thing, or am I only having a "Grandad Look"?

It's likely to be a neutral position switch which is in the gearbox (accessible near the top, if memory serves). Unplug the switch to test (the switch engages when neutral is selected, so disconnecting the plug is electrically the same thing as having the car in gear).

I'd bet money it's the NPS. The same thing happened on my 2011 Thai and my friends 2012 Thai. We didn't buy new NPS's we did this (see short video) and they've given us no issues since. If you want to save a bit of money try this repair first otherwise buy a new NPS.

My 2007 D40 (Spanish) cruise control (CC) got erratic a number of years ago. I got by by pushing gearstick to left which engaged cruise control. During Covid truck was unused for a good while. The CC now didn’t work with gear push to left also whether coincidental in maybe 3rd 4th & 5th gear loss of power when I floored the accelerator & a bit of shuddering too. Got dealer to replace NPS yesterday & 🤞the loss of acceleration above hasn’t happened on test drive. Only issue is the CC is still not working & also not working with gear push to left in 4th 6th gear. Any suggestions appreciated.

Heres my thoughts, im by no means a mechanic but i like to get to know my stx550 by working on it meself, as alot of people do, todays cars are to tech and workshops to exy, we like many ground mechanics today are not up with the designers, mother boards that run the electronics in todays vehicles are made to confuse even the best mechanical experts.. liquids and air pressure, play a big part, hence the hay wire sensors. Replace oils first, sensors count on ther granules, diff engine steering, and gearbox, then vacuum hoses.. know its age. just my thoughts from a mate of a nissan mate.

Just quickly my cruise controll stopped working a little time after my engine light came on(orange) that usually means an oil change, Red colour is different issue. Mate suggested i change the rear diff oil and bingo lights gone and cruise control worked again.

That doesn't sound feasible. It may have been just a coincidence that the orange warning light resolved itself which often happens.

According to the manual the orange light isn't an oil change alert but the oil light flashes red if the oil level is too low. The only sensors related to engine oil are level and pressure. There's no sensor that determines the oil condition but there's a countdown service time indicator in the dash display.

Orange / yellow: The orange or yellow check engine warning light indicates an emissions control fault. Usual faults include:
• Oxygen sensor
• Loose gas cap
• Spark plug/ignition coil issues
• Mass airflow sensor failure
• Exhaust gas recirculation valve

There's no electronic sensor or connection in the differential to alert the ECM about the differential oil condition or level and no connection with the cruise control system.

I have had a lot of orange check engine lights come on in my 550, I was told it had something to do with the coolant system getting an air bubble in it, it eventually goes away. Red was the egr valve at around 200,000, and also a sensor in the fuel filter.
 
This doesn't make sense either ... is there a spelling mistake? Can you eloborate or correct "sensors count on ther granules?"

Probably was coincidence, but it worked, maybe people could just try it, and granules? Isnt that the **** that makes up the strength of liquids?.

Yes I came across that when I scanned a paper about pharmaceutical drugs :)

As I said there's only oil level and oil pressure sensors. There's a temperature sensor on the head but that's a variable resistor. There's no sensor that monitors the condition of the oil ... I have a Mercedes car and that only has oil level and oil pressure monitoring.

So not sure what the Nissan friend was telling you but I've learnt you have to be careful listening to the fella behind the counter at the Dealers .. especially if you want to protect the hard earned in your wallet.

Like the bloke at the Mercedes Dealer who told me if I didn't use the Mercedes branded automatic transmission fluid at nearly $50 per litre .... and get them to do the auto service ... my transmission "would blow up!". They'd quoted me $1200 for the filter and ATF change which I figured was outrageous. You need about 10 litres so $500 just for the fluid is nonsense. I've also been around long enough to know Mercedes don't make oil and just market rebranded major oil manufacturers products.

It didn't take long to find out the Mercedes ATF was Fuchs Titan 4134. Mercedes even used the same container with a MB sticker on it. I bought the Fuchs Titan 4134 for $9 per litre and did the 7GTronic service myself for about $100 ATF, $25 for the filter and four hours work. That was 50,000 kilometres ago and the transmission is smooth quiet and like new. I'm about to do the auto service again so will have another go at "blowing it up" :)
 
Yes scott52, i dont listen to much to the bloke behind the counter, but i will to the bloke who builds them. it is common knowledge that even the 75c washers have electrodes compatible with its surroundings in these flash new cars since around 2004, they do have a life span and will give out, stopping the correct information getting back to the computer. Plus i think cars have changed a hell of alot since the oil and pressure sensor days. Thers cars out ther driving by themselves. All im.saying is maybe the new car needs the right oil and coolants at the right time.
