ABS light on, no fault codes?

Often caused by wheel bearings letting go. You can often hear this as a slight difference in sound coming from the car as it goes around a left bend then a right bend. If the sound is more pronounced going around a right hand bend, it's your left side bearing that's damaged. Bearings start shedding material and, combined with the grease, cause clumps to occur in the ABS rings and triggers the ABS warning.

Also a broken wheel speed sensor. The rears are the most likely to have problems as they're exposed. It won't engage 4wd if you've lost a wheel speed sensor so that's a test you can do.
Had a bit of a look today. Seems to go into 4wd ok. 4-lo remains flashing when switching to that. I think the biggest symptom not reported by the daughter was the sinking brake pedal. As the fluid level is fine I am thinking a vacuum leak?
Definitely possible. The brake booster may need to be tested, there were (a long time ago) a couple of reports of the vacuum diaphragm inside the booster failing. How's the turbo boost, is performance ok? Any black smoke (large amounts)?
4LO flashing means it hasn't engaged but that could be for other reasons. What's needed:
* Foot brake ON. There are two switches on the brake pedal for cruise control fitted vehicles. Both switches need to work. Thankfully they're easy to disassemble (remove with a twist) and clean.
* Vehicle in neutral - NPS (on gearbox) must report being in neutral (0V return from sender in gearbox). Test by unplugging it.
